Women learn art of self defence

THE Golden Cobra School of Martial Arts, operating for 23 years, is now offering a new women’s self-defence program.
By responding to the needs of the community, the program aims to empower women with techniques to deal with dangerous situations.
During the six-week program, students will learn how to defend against a physical attack and against a weapon, and how to deal with domestic violence and emotional abuse.
The program also covers public transport and car security, domestic awareness and home security and information on contacts for crime prevention.
The program is delivered in a dedicated training facility by three fully-qualified instructors, Stephanie Hartridge, Sandra Cattini-Schultz and Kathryn Bentley.
Ziad Zakharia from “one on one Xphys” is also on hand to provide rehabilitation treatment and exercise.
The course involves both theory and practical work so students gain full confidence and support about their personal safety.
Stephanie said that the course is about being proactive about personal safety and learning what not to do.
“It explains how to avoid bad situations and what to do if you’re in one,” she said.
“This program is not about martial arts, but personal safety.”
Women of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to register for the course, which is supported by the Community Policing Squad.
Similar courses have been run previously with the Shire of Yarra Ranges, local schools and community groups.
The program begins in October, and is run every Wednesday for six weeks at 1681 Burwood Highway, Belgrave.
Classes are approximately one hour duration.
