Students cook up a treat

They may not be “masterchefs” but local primary school students sure knew how to cook up a storm at Silvan Primary School on 28 November.

Students from Olinda, Warburton, Silvan and Seville primary schools went head to head in a cook off to see which students could create the most delicious meal.

The students competed in two 90 minute cook offs – one for a savoury meal and one for sweet meal. Each school had a set budget and they were required to source locally grown food and or school grown ingredients.

Silvan Primary School Students took out best savoury meal in the competition, while Seville Primary whipped up the number one sweet dish, and Olinda Primary School the most creative dish. The Seed to Table Award was taken out by Warburton Primary.

Silvan Primary School Cook-off Coordinator Chloe Girschik said students faced a few challenges in this year’s cook off.

“Prior to coming, kids spent some time practicing at their own school,” Ms Girschik said.

“They had to make a savoury and sweet dish on the day and they had to cook it without the support the help of an adult.”

“On the day all four schools did a good job of cooking and presenting.”

“Every single school came across problems where things didn’t go right and all of them coped with it really well and were able to come up with a solution by themselves.”

Ms Girschik thanked Bunning’s who supported the cook-off with show bags, a fruit tree for each school and $50 vouchers for the winners.
