Local cricket players should prepare for disappointment with heavy rains across Friday and Saturday likely to cancel the first games of the Ringwood and District Cricket Association (RDCA) 2021/22 season.
With junior competitions set to start on Friday 12 November cancelled and senior games on Saturday 13 November looking increasingly unlikely to go ahead, players and coaches will have to wait another week to return to the field.
RDCA announced in a statement that junior competitions would be postponed until following week because of rain affected play.
“The weather gods have conspired against us tonight,” RDCA said.
“In making the decision to call off all junior cricket tonight we have also considered the rain that is forecast later on today, but also the chill factor in that the temperature will only be 13 degrees and falling.”
The statement also said that a decision about senior games over the weekend was imminent.
“A decision on Saturday morning will be made later on tonight, and Sunday morning sometime on Saturday.” RDCA said.
Boronia Cricket Club’s Leigh Blennerhassett said it will be disappointing for players that the senior games are likely to be cancelled.
“The numbers at training have been really positive,” he said.
“They just want to get back with people again; aside from going to work and shopping they haven’t been able to see each other.”
The Association thanked clubs, junior coordinators and volunteers for their hard work in preparing for the season to begin.
“It has been the most challenging season ever in trying to finalise playing numbers and it has created a lot of frustrations,” RDCA said.
“A big thank you to all and I hope once we get the season underway you can sit back and relax and enjoy a great season of cricket.”
