Students in the Yarra Ranges and the Dandenong Ranges from grade 1 to year 8 will have access to the State Government Bike Ed program to help them develop ride safety.
The Bike Ed School program teaches students about safe riding behaviours, road rules and sharing the road in school.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll said the program is being expanded to ensure more Victorian kids are educated about cycling safety.
“The Bike Ed program uses practical, on-the-bike lessons to ensure young riders have the skills to ride safely and older students have the ability and confidence to ride independently,” he said.
“Ride2School Day is an excellent opportunity for families to consider a safe way to travel – while also staying active.”
Delivered by school staff or external accredited organisations, the program is being expanded throughout the state.
The government has introduced cyclist safety rules in recent years including minimum passing distances for cyclists and allowing children under 12 years of age to cycle on footpaths.
