The Burwood Highway Upgrade team visited two local kindergartens last week to talk about road safety and what’s happening out on the streets around town.
With hard hats and high-vis vests in tow, the Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) team showed the kids at Good Start Early Learning and Johnson & Friends Childcare in Ferntree Gully just what it takes to build a new intersection and how to remain safe on the road.
They learned all about the project, road safety, traffic signs and how to cross the road with their parents.
Dressed in hard hats and vests, the little engineers then got stuck into building their own creations with the big blue blocks.
The upgrade is well underway with crews preparing to open new lanes on both sides of the Burwood Highway.
From Monday 30 October to Thursday 2 November, MRPV will work between 7pm and 5am to move safety barriers and create a new work area in the middle of Burwood Highway between Burke Road and Dobson Street.
Once the barriers are in place, McMahons Road and Clyde Street will reopen.
Until early 2024, access will be limited to left-in and left-out while we’re building the new turning lanes.
At this point we will start upgrading the centre median and building the right-turn lanes from Burwood Highway into McMahons Road and Clyde Street.
The upgrade of intersection of Burwood Highway, McMahons Road and Clyde Street intersection will improve safety and access for all road users.
The project will provide traffic signals, upgraded lighting, safer access to Burwood Highway from McMahons and Clyde Roads and three lanes in each direction on Burwood Highway.
This upgrade will install traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, add extra lanes in each direction on Burwood Highway at the intersection, build dedicated left and right-turn lanes from Burwood Highway into McMahons Road and Clyde Street, improve access to businesses with the introduction of a fourth lane on the southern side of Burwood Highway, add extra lanes for turning and through traffic to enable safer turning movements at McMahons Road and Clyde Street, and install more street lights through the intersection to improve visibility and safety.
More than 15,000 vehicles use Burwood Highway in each direction daily through this intersection, with cars using the intersection, especially those turning right onto Burwood Highway from either Clyde Street or McMahons Road, are set to benefit from the new signalised intersection.
The upgrade will increase traffic capacity and accommodate future increases in traffic and pedestrian volumes caused by population growth in the area.
Once completed, the Burwood Highway – McMahons Road Intersection Upgrade will make it easier for the feeder roads to access Burwood Highway.
Construction commenced in mid-2023 and the project is expected to be completed by early 2024.
