Extra services and free travel for ANZAC Day across Victoria

Some Victorians heading to ANZAC Day commemorations will benefit from additional public transport services and free travel, thanks to measures announced by the Government yesterday.

Unitil Saturday 26 April, veterans and war widows can access free travel across the public transport network.

Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams said the additional services reflect the importance of the day.

“The extra public transport on ANZAC Day will give more people a chance to take part in these important commemoration services and get to the MCG for the footy,” she said.

On ANZAC Day itself, current Australian Defence Force personnel, Scouts, Guides, school students, and band members involved in parades can also travel for free—provided they are in uniform or can present appropriate identification.

With more than 50,000 people expected to attend the Dawn Service at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance and the ANZAC Day Parade along St Kilda Road and Swanston Street, major transport providers will bolster services to accommodate the crowd.

Metro Trains will run extra services to Flinders Street Station ahead of the 5:30am start, and Yarra Trams will operate additional routes from approximately 4:15am.

V/Line trains and coaches will follow a Saturday timetable.

Extra tram services will run before and after the parade to connect passengers between Flinders Street Station and the Shrine.

Motorists are advised of significant road closures in the CBD, Southbank, St Kilda Road, Kings Domain, and around the Botanic and Alexandra Gardens between 5am and 2pm.

Public transport services will also be ramped up to support crowds attending major sporting events on ANZAC Day, including the AFL blockbuster between Collingwood and Essendon at the MCG, and the Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney NRL clash at AAMI Park.
