Q and A with Almost June

A special broadcast hit the airwaves last week in the Yarra Ranges, celebrating incredible young talent ahead of the Hilltop festival on Sunday 15 September.

Three different youth bands set up and performed on the radio in the 3MDR studio, giving the teens a chance to showcase their talents on community radio and gain valuable experience in the music industry.

Almost June feature Ella on drums and vocals, Noa on ukulele and vocals, Georgia on guitar, piano and vocals, Eliana on guitar, bass and vocals, Miriam on cello and Beth on piano and vocals – Almost June are in Year 8.

Ella: The band Almost June was formed earlier this year in May, hence the name by a group of close friends who bonded over their shared love of music. During recess and lunch breaks, they would swap favourite songs and original pieces, which eventually led to the idea of starting a band.

Their passion and practice paid off when they had the opportunity to perform on the radio.

Ella: I felt really nervous and excited, But I knew it was a great opportunity, and I was super excited for the experience.

Crediting her love for music to her parents, both of whom are musicians, Ella said their influence played a big role in inspiring her to join the band.

Beth said she’s been annoying my brothers with my singing until I was old enough to talk but I only started formal singing lessons last year at Monbulk College.  Since I started in Year 7, I’ve got involved in everything music related than I can, including taking lessons on the keyboard as well.

“Getting Almost June together with my friends has been so much fun and I’m really proud of what we’ve done and where we’re headed,” she said.

Beth said the band go into the music rooms every recess and lunchtime to practice and are always thinking about new songs and ideas.

“Performing on 3MDR was so much fun and such a great opportunity and experience. I had my whole extended family on both sides listening from home and they sent me lots of messages afterwards to congratulate us,” she said.

” We’re now looking forward to our next gig which is at Hilltop festival and we can’t wait to share new original material with everyone.”

Preparing for their performance at Hilltop this week, the group has been rehearsing weekly at school with their teacher Lisa, and they’;ve also held extra sessions at Ella’s and Eliana’s houses.

With talent, teamwork, and plenty of practice, Almost June is just getting started.
