Shorter showers, bigger savings: Yarra Valley Water’s 4-minute shower challenge

With Melbourne’s water storages down more than 17 per cent over the past year, Yarra Valley Water has launched a new campaign targeting the home’s greediest water user – the shower.

The average Melburnian spends just over seven-minutes in the shower. Cutting that back to four-minutes, saves water, energy, money and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

To help, Yarra Valley Water has created a Spotify playlist of four-minute songs. People can simply pick a track, start showering, and step out when the song ends.

Yarra Valley Water general manager strategy and community, Tiffany White said small changes at home can make a big difference.

“Showers use more water than anywhere else in the home. So the less time we spend singing, studying or solving the world’s problems in the shower, the more water we save,” she said.

“Taking a shorter shower also saves energy, money and reduces carbon emissions – it helps both the environment and people’s hip pocket.”

By reducing shower times from seven minutes to four, the average Melbourne household can save 27 litres of water per shower, save $280 on their water and energy bills per year, and cut 359 kg CO2-e greenhouse gas emissions per year – the equivalent of a drive from Melbourne to Townsville.

Ms White said everyone had a role to play in conserving water.

“Melbourne is facing drier conditions, so now is the time to make every drop count,” she said.

“Small water savings at home may seem minor, but they can add up to make a big difference.”

Some of the four-minute tracks include, drivers license by Olivia Rodrigo, Don’t Stop Believing by Journey, Abracadabra by Lady Gaga, (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones.
