THE Sherbrooke Rangers Men’s Forest travelled to Thomastown to play second-placed St George to prove they were deserved league champions.
The game started at a slow pace with simple backline passing and several through balls that brought out some good saves from the opposition keeper. Sherbrooke were awarded a penalty, which Frank Di Sario converted.
Large holes began to open up in the middle of the park and St George began knocking the ball around very nicely and eventually used their speed to equalise.
Mario Korporaal kept Sherbrooke in the game with an excellent performance in goal, but despite blocking the speedy forwards one on one early in the second half the ball fell back at his feet to give St George a deserved 2-1 lead.
Coach Eddie Woischuk then threw Paul Baldock into the middle of the park and Sherbrooke went to three at the back, which changed the whole complexion of the game. Sherbrooke began dominating through Baldock’s passing and distribution, but the opportunities went begging with David Ceeney missing a back post header from two metres out.
However, Ryan Cassidy got a good cross to Rob Wynne who chested down the ball and slotted home to draw level.
Forest then ran over the opposition and when father and son Terry and Rob Wynne combined for a classic third goal the game and the league was decided.
