Fergus emerges Emerald winner on the countback

By Dennis Fuller
SUMMER had arrived at Emerald Golf Club on Saturday with the thick cloud of smoke reminding all of the fires further up the hills.
Some took the opportunity to claim they were hitting the ball out of sight while others made the best of the quick fairway conditions to post a course rating of 68 for the day.
When the match committee had pored their way through the scorecards for the day’s rounds, they found that three golfers had scored 39 stableford points.
After much lobbying and gnashing of teeth, and further scrutiny, it was decreed that Graeme Fergus was the winner overall as well as being the winner of B Grade.
Greg Horrocks, returning to form, was another on 39 points, which gave him the upper hand in A Grade for the day.
Ian Scott also scored 39 points to win the C Grade crown and laurel wreath.
Others to play well were Pete Stevens and Peter Jones with 38 points, Barry Cook with 37, Dennis Fuller and Ken Sumsion with 36, while Peter Coniglione and Ben Balfour came in with 35.
Nearest the pins were won by Ross Martin on the 12th, Martin Yeats (13th), Sumsion (17th) while Fergus rounded out a profitable day by taking the cash for the pro pin on the 18th.
Next week there is another stableford event up for grabs.
