Service for creature comforts

By Ed Merrison
THE Reverend John Simpson is calling on all creatures great and small to join him at a pet blessing ceremony at either Olinda or Kalorama on Sunday, 8 October.
The service will take place four days after the day of St Francis, the patron saint of animals and the environment.
Reverend Simpson says he loves animals and the birdlife and possums of the Hills are one of the pleasures of having a congregation here.
“We’ve had lots of pets in the family,” he said.
“We’ve had cats, several dogs, plenty of guinea pigs, goldfish, and my son had a Mexican walking fish – a strange creature that inhabited the bottom of the tank and you fed it raw meat.”
Rev Simpson blessed about 12 animals at the Olinda service last year, while Kalorama hosted 20 assorted pets, including a cart horse.
He sees the day as a chance to recognise the wonders of creation and promote people’s responsibility in looking after them.
“It’s a chance to thank God for such a wonderful variety of creatures.
“It’s great to come to church but it’s also important to encourage people to look after their pets and protect animals better.”
The service at St Matthew’s Church in Olinda takes place at 9.30am and will be followed by an 11am service at St Michael and All Angels in Kalorama.
