CHRISTMAS is nearly here and Sherbrooke Family and Children’s Centre (SFCC) is recycling to spread Christmas cheer.
Years three and four children at SFCC in Upwey have been embracing sustainability by using the ‘reducing, reusing and recycling’ concept.
Earlier in December interest was displayed in reusing unwanted toys from the children’s home and giving them to the less fortunate.
This idea was also designed to reduce the amount of landfill waste in local garbage drop-offs.
A Christmas Giving Tree was created by staff and children by handprints.
The children were then encouraged to wrap a second-hand toy from home to place under the tree.
Families of the children reported back to the centre about how much of an inspiration the project has been for both the child and their family.
“Those presents are not for us, they are for poor children,” a child said.
“These are to make the children happy at Christmas time,” they said.
Presents will be delivered to Monbulk Community Care Network on 16 December for distribution.
“This experience is a wonderful and rewarding example of how young children are capable and competent learners, able to grasp the often complex concepts relating to sustainability.”
Monbulk Community Care Network is at 63 Main Street, Monbulk.
