Athletes head to head

By JAMIE STRUDLEY

WEEK three of Yarra Ranges Athletics summer season provided the opportunities for each of the four clubs to go head to head.
With club colours (yellow, blue, red and green) visible around the ground, the day was destined for excitement, intrigue and competitiveness. Perfect weather enabled athletes to really enjoy the atmosphere and the athletic events which included much-loved relay events.
After presentation of the club captains and the colourful march (run) past, events got underway. First up was an excited group of Under 6-8 year olds in the shuttle relay. The fun and laughter from that event spilled over to the remainder of the morning.
The friendly competition continued throughout the day, culminating in the exciting relays.
Final results will not be known until next weekend when one of the four clubs will have bragging rights for the next 12 months.
During the week several club athletes represented their respective primary schools at the Eastern Region Championships with many athletes qualifying for the State Championships in a week’s time. We also had many athletes at the State Secondary Schools championships. Congratulations to all theathletes for some superb efforts and excellent results.
Round two of the AV shield was held on Sunday. It was great to see another excellent turnout from our senior athletes and some great performances, with many athletes competing in multiple events and even trying some new events. I lost count of the number of PBs achieved throughout the day. One of the best efforts of the day was from Malcolm Duncan who competed in six events, not a bad effort for a 50-plus athlete.
Next week we have normal competition on Saturday, followed by the Box Hill relays on Sunday.
Always a fun day, we look forward to seeing as many athletes as possible having a run.
All our athletes have access to top coaching from our caring, committed and highly qualified coaches, who are making a big impact on the athletes already working with them.
