BEN Lucas has already dedicated seven years to the Australian Army, but his service doesn’t end there.
On Saturday 28 March, the Boronia resident will march 40 kilometres carrying 20 kilograms to raise money for the Mount Dandenong RSL and ‘Solider On,’ a charity supporting homeless veterans.
Starting at Federation Square at 3am, the solo walk is expected to take nine hours, which Ben plans to complete unaccompanied.
Ben, who owns personal training business ‘Force Fit’ as well as working as a plumber, was inspired to undertake the walk after he saw a sign outside the RSL appealing for help with general maintenance and felt compelled to help.
“It’s so important to keep local RSL branches alive and supporting the community,” he said.
“The older guys can mentor the younger ones and it provides support for everyone involved. It’s just crucial.”
On his arrival, the RSL will host a barbecue starting at noon with the community invited to attend. Ben hopes to raise $20,000 for the cause, and has set up an online fundraising page for those wishing to donate.
As a member of the Army for seven years, Ben served in East Timor on a peacekeeping mission. Maintaining a strong link to the defence community, he is now alarmed at the rate of homelessness among returned servicemen.
“The number of homeless ex-defence veterans is alarmingly high, which is simply unacceptable,” he said.
“With the help of everyone who donates, we’re trying to make an impact on the lives of people living on the streets.”
To donate to the cause, search ‘Stomp to Sassafras’ on mycause.com.au or contact the Mount Dandenong RSL Club.
