One sweet-sounding hills icon

THE Sweet Sassafras Open Community Choir started as a way to bring together music-loving locals, but has grown to become a hills icon.
Recently celebrating its 10th birthday, the choir has recorded some impressive achievements throughout its lifespan and plans to continue to strengthen into the future.
Chorister Jackie Warburton said the choir had become popular and many locals found it to be a great way to connect with others in the area.
“The choir’s purpose is to bring communities together to sing for pleasure, well-being, friendship and to create opportunities for personal growth through a cappella performance,” she said.
Highlights of the choir’s 10 years include the production of a CD in 2007, involvement in the Melbourne Millennium chorus and regular performances at many local fetes, carols by candlelight and local music festivals including The Basin Music Festival and the End of the Line Festival.
The choir meets at Sassafrass Primary School every Monday night under the direction of Chris Risely. Jackie said the anniversary has been both an opportunity for reflection and a time to look to the future.
“The last 10 years have seen the Sweet Sassafras Open Community Choir grow and strengthen into a touchstone of musical inspiration and togetherness for the community.
“Happy birthday to the choir, and here’s to 10 more.”
