UNFORTUNATELY, Samantha Dunn has not thought out the ‘A metre matters’ very well.
What is being proposed will work quite well, where the road has two or more lanes each way, providing plenty of room for a car driver to move aside.
However, the majority of roads in the east have one lane in each direction.
To meet the proposed metre distance, a driver would have to move to the right and over the centreline, which will be a huge embarrassment when a car coming in the opposite direction needs to do the same to clear a bicycle on their side.
Apparently, Samantha Dunn regards the safety of the cyclist to be more important than the motorist’s well-being.
