Yarra Ranges Council publicly recognised and thanked more than 100 volunteers who worked year-round to help isolated, aged and frail residents.
Mayor Tony Stevenson said National Meals on Wheels Day on 28 August was a chance to stop and say thanks to volunteers who dedicated their time to others.
“By having access to good, healthy food, vulnerable residents, such as our elderly residents and people with a disability, can live more independently,” he said.
“What can be forgotten is that without the help of more than 100 volunteers here in Yarra Ranges, and thousands more across Australia, this long-standing and valued program simply wouldn’t exist.”
Cr Stevenson said the volunteers not only delivered food.
“They check in, build relationships and help to reduce social isolation,” he said.
“If things aren’t going well, they can help to connect the clients with family or, if needed, medical assistance.”
Meals on Wheels has been run in parts of the Yarra Ranges for more than 50 years.
“With people living longer and living independently, it’s more important than ever to have this vital service in our community,” Cr Stevenson said.
Over-65s can call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to find out if they’re eligible for the program.
