Yarra Ranges scam alert

Police are warning Yarra Ranges residents to be aware of a current scam taking place with an organised group of men.

The men are allegedly claiming to be from an asphalting company and offering heavily discounted services.

Police said this group of men have heavy Irish and English accents and have recently been scamming residents in the Silvan area.

The scam is as follows: one of the men attend an address unannounced, claiming to be from an asphalting company working nearby and offering to asphalt the person’s driveway at a heavily discounted rate due to them having excess material left over. Male quotes a cheap price and the group begins work within minutes of the homeowner agreeing.

As the day progresses, the price of the job multiplies up to five times the original quote and they demand up front payment by cash or via bank transfer.

The work performed is sub-standard and usually requires the owner to employ a legitimate contractor to repair the mess left behind.

If residents are approached by this group they are strongly advised to decline any offer and immediately call Police on 000.
