Eastern Volunteers has established a Volunteer Bank to redeploy volunteers and paid staff who can no longer work in their roles due to Covid-19.
The organisation is working with local councils, such as Yarra Ranges, by gathering volunteers who can contribute to emergency strategies.
These volunteers can also fill the volunteer workforce gaps for not-for-profit agencies during this period.
The Volunteer Bank has deployed volunteers to deliver essential goods, support animal shelters with remote home inspections, to deliver meals and phone support.
Volunteers have also been used for community transport services to take food and medicine to people who can’t leave their homes.
Eastern Volunteers’ manager of volunteer resource services, Lee Barker, encouraged people to get in touch if they need volunteers or are interested in getting involved.
“If there are community agencies out there who need volunteers to continue to deliver services
then we want to hear from you,” she said.
“If you are someone who can volunteer during this period then please call us.
“You might be able to virtual volunteer from home or do someone’s shopping for them.
“At all times we maintain social distancing but there are many things people can practically do now.”
