The Covid-19 crisis and subsequent lock down has been music the ears of those who have always craved time to learn an instrument or reconnect with music.
Blair Manie, the manager of Upwey Music, said the crisis had prompted an increase in customers buying instruments like guitars and ukuleles.
“Lots of people are investing in instruments. While they can’t go out at night and are trapped at home during the day, they are using the extra time to learn to play the guitar or teach their kids guitar or ukulele,” Mr Manie explained.
He said kalimbas, or thumb pianos, had also proved popular with people drawn to them for their peaceful tones.
Customers were also buying microphones, leads and digital interface converters so they could connect instruments to computers and record their own music.
“Some people might have four or five songs they have written and want to record them.”
To help customers stay at home, Mr Manie has been delivering phone and online orders in the local area after the store closes. He can also send items via post.
He encouraged those thinking of exploring music to give it a go.
“As long as you play every day, even as little as five minutes every day, you will be playing within a reasonable amount of time.
“And it’s never too late. I have had students in their 80s. But most importantly, have fun with it. The aim is not to become an impressive musician, but to experience the sheer joy of music.”
