Knox Highway Patrol are investigating a serious collision in Boronia on Wednesday 10 November.
Police said an emergency response vehicle stopped on the southbound emergency lane on Eastlink around 3.30pm because the driver was assisting a motorist who had come to a stop the freeway after he discovered his Nissan SUV had a flat tire.
A white Ford wagon crashed into the rear of emergency response truck causing the truck to hit a 56-year-old Clyde North man, the Nissan SUV and a 65-year-old Chelsea Heights man who was changing the flat tire.
The 43-year-old driver of the Ford, his two passengers and one other were taken to hospital after the incident.
A 45-year old Cranbourne East man situated in the rear passenger seat received life-threatening injuries.
Police are appealing for anyone who saw the white Ford wagon travelling southbound on Eastlink prior to the collision or with dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
