With the release of ATAR scores, students throughout the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Ranges have finally finished a challenging year of learning hindered by lockdowns, restrictions and online classes.

Students at Mater Christi College in Belgrave met on the steps of their school to celebrate after results were released via text message at 7am on Thursday 16 December.

Student Emma Gerber said she felt elated to finish school before she starts a science scholarship at Melbourne University next year.

“It’s nice for it all to be wrapped up,” she said.

“It’s like breathing out for the first time in two years.”

Jackie May said she was excited for the opportunity to relax over the holidays.

“I’m planning to do bachelor of science and master of data science afterwards.” she said.

Gabriella Peterson was College Dux at Mater Christi College with an ATAR of 98.45.

Principal Maria Haggett said the students have shown resilience throughout a tough two years of VCE.

“The way students and teachers have adapted for the online environment and then to flip and come back is really amazing,” she said.

“A big congratulation is in order for all students, no matter their score.”

All VCAL students at Mater Christi College completed their VET studies and graduated in 2021.

Year 12 coordinators Tara Baker and Linda Tilson said they were proud of the effort by students throughout the year.

“The students and their families were incredibly encouraging to the staff throughout the last two years,” Mrs Tilson said.

“They made us feel so appreciated and were really good at that.”

47 students attained scores of 40 or higher in their classes, with 47 per cent of students attaining an ATAR of over 80. Two students at the college received a perfect study score of 50.

Vice Principal Julie Feeney said the school was all the students have done a remarkable job.

“As a three-way partnership with our families, our staff and our students it’s just such an impressive result,” she said.

“It goes to show that online learning can breed success for students, and this particular group have got all sorts of opportunities coming up.”
