On Thursday 26 May, Knox City Council will be acknowledging members of the Stolen Generation and their Suffering, by hosting a Sorry Day Ceremony at the Knox Civic Centre from 10am to 1pm.
The event will include a Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony, traditional dance and music performances and a speech from Rueben Berg.
“We encourage the community to join us as we learn from Rueben and educate ourselves on the grief of the Stolen Generations – still felt by many across Knox today,” Knox Council said.
“The day additionally marks the beginning of Reconciliation Week, occurring each year from 27 May to 3 June.”
Knox City Council priorities five strategic focus areas using the Aboriginal and Torres Strait needs analysis recommendations received in 2021: Respect and recognition, cultural heritage, employment and economic development, health and wellbeing, and civic partnership.
“While Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week are important steps in healing local members of the Stolen Generations, it is paramount we are making progress outside of significant cultural dates, also,” Council said.
“We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.”
