Water Valley Water is urging under-35s to shower shorter after a recent survey found a third of people born between 1996 and 2010 take 10 to 15-minute showers.
The survey, commissioned by the metropolitan water corporations, found under 35s showered for longer than older generations, who usually shower for 4 to 5 minutes.
Yarra Valley Water Managing Director Pat McCafferty said being mindful of how we use water can protect resources and save money through better habits.
“Young adults are spending longer in the shower and we know the average household uses over 30 per cent of its water in the bathroom,” he said.
“With a drying climate and growing population, we need to develop good water use habits and protect water supplies for the future.
“By cutting back to four minutes, the average household can save 24 litres of water per shower and $200 a year on water and energy bills. Small changes like this are easy to make and collectively have a big impact.”
The Saving Water in Melbourne survey found Generation Z was more likely to underestimate their water usage in comparison to Baby Boomers, less likely to place a high importance on saving water and generally take longer showers compared to others.
Yarra Valley Water customers may see a new shower shorter campaign, encouraging people to cut out water wasting behaviours.
The campaign will run until 25 June online, on outdoor signage and in several different languages.
