Four people were lucky to escape injury after a fire caused by fairy lights ripped through a unit in Ferntree Gully early this morning, destroying around 60 per cent of the property.

Six CFA vehicles responded to the fire on Conn Street at around 9.45am on Tuesday 6 September, where they found a two-storey townhouse alight upon arrival.

Paramedics assessed two pre-school-aged girls, a woman in her 40s and a man in his late 20s at the scene. Fortunately, none of them required further treatment or transport to the hospital.

The CFA said a fire investigator attended the scene and determined the cause to be fairy lights.

“The fire was brought under control at 10am and declared safe just before 10.30am,” CFA said.

“The power company and a local council building surveyor were called to the scene.”
