Olinda-Monbulk Road is closed between the Invermay intersection and 218 Olinda-Monbulk Road, due to the Department of Transport and Planning tending to 39 roadside trees.
A full road closure is needed to erect a large crane and tower to reach the trees.
Smaller crews will work on other trees simultaneously either side of the road to reopen the road as soon as possible.
“We need to remove 32 trees on Olinda-Monbulk Road due to their poor condition and to keep motorists safe,” a Department of Transport and Planning spokesperson said.
“Experts have assessed the trees and if left untreated they could present a hazard to road users.
“We thank motorists for their patience while we complete these important safety works on Olinda-Monbulk Road.”
Wherever possible, the Department of Transport and Planning is pruning the trees rather than removing them.
A signed detour will be in place via Monbulk Road, Sherbrooke Road and Mount Dandenong Tourist Road. Reduced speed limits will be in place to keep motorists and our crews safe.
Access to homes and businesses will be maintained at all times during work with traffic management in place to assist with access.
Works began on Tuesday 21 March and are expected to be completed on Friday 24 March, weather permitting, with crews working between 7am and 7pm.
