The Burwood Highway Upgrade crew has completed another major milestone, completing a traffic switch providing access to Clyde Street and McMahons Road.
With vehicles now switched over to drive in the left-hand lanes between Burke Road and Dobson Street on the highway, Clyde Street and McMahons Road were reopened this week and will now allow left-in, left-out traffic access at the highway.
The switch signals the start of works between Burke Road and Dobson Street to complete the intersection.
The intersection upgrade will shift to the centre median and building the right-turn lanes from Burwood Highway into McMahons Road and Clyde Street and finalising the intersection ahead of a full intersection reopening in early 2024.
The upgrade of intersection of Burwood Highway, McMahons Road and Clyde Street intersection will improve safety and access for all road users.
The project will provide traffic signals, upgraded lighting, safer access to Burwood Highway from McMahons and Clyde Roads and three lanes in each direction on Burwood Highway.
This upgrade will install traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, add extra lanes in each direction on Burwood Highway at the intersection, build dedicated left and right-turn lanes from Burwood Highway into McMahons Road and Clyde Street, improve access to businesses with the introduction of a fourth lane on the southern side of Burwood Highway, add extra lanes for turning and through traffic to enable safer turning movements at McMahons Road and Clyde Street and install more street lights through the intersection to improve visibility and safety.
More than 15,000 vehicles use Burwood Highway in each direction daily through this intersection, with cars using the intersection, especially those turning right onto Burwood Highway from either Clyde Street or McMahons Road, are set to benefit from the new signalised intersection.
The upgrade will increase traffic capacity and accommodate future increases in traffic and pedestrian volumes caused by population growth in the area.
Once completed, the Burwood Highway – McMahons Road Intersection Upgrade will make it easier for the feeder roads to access Burwood Highway.
Construction commenced in mid-2023 and the project is expected to be completed by early 2024.
