Three… Aussie-themed Book Week costume ideas

With the Children’s Book Council of Australia already in full swing, here are three easy Aussie-themed costumes to put together in a hurry for your next Book Week parade.

1. Blinky Bill

Bring the iconic Australian children’s book character Blinky Bill to life with a simple costume. All you need is red overalls, paper koala ears, and red shoes. You can easily make the ears by cutting them out of construction paper or felt and attaching them to a headband or hat. Then complete the costume with a long stick slung over your shoulders complete with a teatowel carrying a few bits and bobs.

2. The ‘jolly swagman’ from Waltzing Matilda

Recreate the classic Australian folk song character by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, a plaid or flannel shirt, and carrying a large bag on your back. You can fashion the swag by rolling up a blanket or towel and tying it with string. Don’t forget to hum a few bars of “Waltzing Matilda” as you parade around! For a bit of extra flair, tie a few corks onto the hat with some spare twine lying around the house.

3. The Rainbow Serpent

Inspired by the Aboriginal Dreamtime legend, this costume is all about colour and creativity. Dress in a mix of vibrant colours, from head to toe, and accessorise with paper or fabric scales, horns, or other serpent-inspired touches. Encourage your kids to get imaginative with their interpretations of this mythical creature. Finish it off with a makeshift tail or tongue.
