The ‘Have your Say’ consultation by Knox City Council remains in full swing and residents of the Knox municipality are being invited to give feedback on several aspects of the Ferntree Gully Cemetery by 2 December.
This is an opportunity for residents to share their thoughts on additional services and features they would like to see, and ideas on how to make the cemetery more welcoming for visitors.
Ferntree Gully Cemetery was established in 1873 on 5 acres of Crown land. Knox Council took over responsibility as a Trustee of the cemetery in 1982 to manage cemetery operations.
The cemetery is at full capacity with a limited number of ashes positions remaining for purchase. There is community demand to develop more ashes positions and memorialisation opportunities and the masterplan will address this.
This feedback will help to develop the Ferntree Gully Cemetery Masterplan.
The master plan will not change the land size of the cemetery. Due to the cemetery’s fixed land size, there is no opportunity to develop more gravesite positions. It will not change the current land zoning or planning controls. The land is zoned for public use and has planning controls to protect the vegetation and heritage land and restrict development.
Setting out a strategic direction for the cemetery, the masterplan aims to develop more ashes position and memorialisation opportunities to meet community demand, improve the landscape, make the cemetery a welcoming space, respect the cemetery’s historical significance and local environment and fulfil the council’s ongoing obligation to maintain the cemetery.
Residents can give feedback in several ways – by completing the survey, in writing or by requesting a phone or in-person consultation.
