The Mountain Howlers rock on

A special broadcast hit the airwaves last week in the Yarra Ranges, celebrating incredible young talent ahead of the Hilltop festival on Sunday 15 September.

Three different youth bands set up and performed on the radio in the 3MDR studio in Upwey, giving the teens a chance to showcase their talents on community radio and gain valuable experience in the music industry. They chatted with Star Mail over email after the event, telling us all about their bands.

The Mountain Howlers are Ned on guitar and vocals, Noah on piano, Spencer on drums and Lennox on bass.

The group are in Years 7 and 8!

Lennox: Hey, I’m Lennox the bassist for the Mountain Howlers, I’ve been playing bass for about three years now but before that I played guitar for two years.

“I was mostly influenced by my music from my dad with a bit of Wu-Tang Clan and a bit of the Strokes.”

“I was really excited to play on the radio but also a bit nervous because it was my first time. All the people at 3MDR were supportive and helpful.”

“I’ve known Ned and Spencer since I was like six or seven but I’ve known Noah for two years.”

“I’m also really excited about the Hilltop Festival this will be our second year in a row. Last year was fun but this year will be better. Last year we had a really good gig at Farndon’s Hall and raised a lot of money, we recorded a song and will be having a release party so that will be fun.”

“Bye! -Lennox :›”

Spencer: “Hi, I’m Spencer, and I’m the drummer for the Mountain Howlers. I was introduced to drums when I was about six or seven years old and since then, I’ve made a lot of adjustments to the way I play.”

“The Mountain Howlers became a thing in early 2022 and up to now, have played lots of gigs at lots of different places for lots of different people.”

“When we came up with the name, we all agreed that it had to have something to do with mountains and we thought that the Mountain Howlers sounded great. ”

“Recently, we have played on the local radio station, 3MDR. I feel like this was great for the band, and it was an amazing experience. Overall, I think that our band has done quite well so far, and we hope to get even better.”
