PETA Minter is drumming up support for African tunes. She is sharing the art of drumming with hills musicians at workshops in Emerald and Montrose this month.
Minter has performed with some of Australia’s top musicians including drum-master David Jones and saxophonist Fiona Burnett. She has been teaching drumming since 1992 throughout the Melbourne and Gippsland areas. Minter said drumming was an uplifting experience.
“It eliminates the stresses of the day by allowing you to feel connected and be in the moment,” she said.
“I have seen the effects of what drumming can do – it frees, empowers and spreads joy through the entire group.”
In 2007, Minter traveled to Africa to study the art. While in Africa she studied with drum masters from Ghana and also spent five hours each day learning local rhythms and songs.
Minter is holding a special Drum 4 Fun five-week course in Emerald from 12 February and in Montrose from 18 February. She said people didn’t require any musical experience, but must have a willingness to learn and have fun. Those wanting to find out more should contact Minter on 0413 597 279.
