HILLS commuters will soon benefit from a $1.8 million long-awaited bus improvement plan.
The State Government last week announced the public transport boost following an extensive outer-eastern bus services review.
Eastern Ranges Transport Coalition chairwoman and Yarra Ranges councillor Samantha Dunn said the decision was a step in the right direction.
She said several council recommendations had been adopted but more still needed to be done for those living in more remote locations.
The Yarra Ranges 24 page submission called for improvements to peak hour frequencies, better bus-train connections and more late night operating hours during the week and on Sundays.
This wish list has resulted in the State Government agreeing to boost services to route 663 from Belgrave to Lilydale to extend the hours of operation to 9pm seven days a week
Route 688 from Croydon to Lilydale will also be extended to take in Montrose and combined together with 698 from Croydon to Montrose.
This move is expected to boost weekday, weekend and public holiday services. Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula said the Government was taking action to improve options for commuters in the outer-east.
“Catching the bus will be a viable option for tourists visiting the Dandenongs, with more frequent connections from Croydon and Upper Ferntree Gully Stations to Sassafras, Olinda and Kalorama,” he said.
“For local residents, more frequent connections to train stations, and services operating till 9pm, seven days a week on several routes will make catching the bus even easier.”
Cr Dunn said the improvements would go some way towards improving the shire’s public transport woes.
“However, if the Government was serious about reducing car dependency and making it easier for people to access work, study, training, medical appointments, social and sporting activities, more extensive improvements are needed,” she said.
Cr Dunn said the council would continue to push for better services.
“In 2005 we presented the State Government with a petition signed by more than 5000 residents calling for improvements to bus services.
“While we haven’t got everything we asked for we are still pleased with the progress that has been made to date,” she said.
