MONBULK allrounder Darren Hill has propelled his team to the top of the ladder smashing 109 from 70 balls against The Basin in Round 8 of the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association.
Chasing a modest 155, the Hawks ended the day on 5/252 with Mick Coen also amongst the runs with 57.
Hill will lead an FTGDCA Colts team to play in the Bendigo Country Week this week.
Cody Morris (81) and Shane Cosstick (60) formed the backbone in Eildon Park’s fighting performance in defeating Ferntree Gully by 6 runs.
For the Gully, off spinner Andrew Field’s fine effort of 5/48 was not enough to bring home the chocolates.
Belgrave (286) had too many runs on the board knocking off top side Johnson Park who were all out for 231.
Victorian Country representative Bryn Gaunt returning from the Australian Country Championships in Mackay made 86.
However, it was new Magpies inswing bowler Peter Dixon who collected an impressive 7/46.
Upwey (352) were never troubled by Upper Gully who did well to bat the full day for 262.
Kings skipper Alister Lord provided the humorous moment of the day when he strode to the wicket aided by an umbrella in an effort to get the umpires attention however, play continued. Phil Salter top scored with 73 from 60 balls.
Dark horse Rowville (258) is in good form and notched another win at the expense of St John’s Tecoma (175).
Marc Hardy with 45 and Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge (32) both got starts but the target was out of reach thanks to the bowling of father and son combination, Craig and Ryan Arnell.
Mountain Gate skipper Athula Samarasekera captured 5/14 to end any hopes Knoxfield had in their pursuit of 242.
The Knights were dismissed for 198 and must put a win on the board in the near future to avoid relegation.
In the Decoite Shield, Ferntree Gully tied with Eildon Park as both locked on 160 at stumps.
Footballers defeated a disappointing Knox Gardens for outright points.
Lysterfield number 11 batsman Scott Buckingham needed two runs off the last ball of the day against The Basin and struck a boundary through mid wicket to win a thriller. Chris Hill was the man of the match with 55 and 7/50.
Upwey’s Trav Richardson dominated after the tea break against Knox taking 6/53 to help the Tigers win by 13 runs.
Auravale (211) proved too strong for Johnson Park who failed to defend 178 and Knoxfield’s young Luke Scanlan (94) will push for senior selection in a great win over potential finalists South Belgrave.
