CFA gives tanks

OLINDA CFA has unveiled its newest tool – a 98,000 litre water tank – in the lead up to the bushfire season.
Brigade president Neill Grenfell said the new tank would help save the town’s water supply.
“It allows us to not go to the well every time there is a fire,” he said.
The water tank will also enable the brigade to fill more than 30 fire tankers.
Mr Grenfell said the project first started in 2007 with an idea to build two 45,000 litre tanks.
He said it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of a $38,000 Federal Government grant.
Senator for Victoria Jacinta Collins was given the honour of turning on the water last Wednesday, 5 August.
“This increases the capacity or the brigade’s water supply and will significantly improve their capacity to respond to fires,” Ms Collins said.
“It will also be useful in saving water used in the brigade’s training exercises.”
Mr Grenfell said the tank was just one step towards the brigade becoming more environmentally sustainable.
He said the brigade was also working with local Landcare groups in a bid to cut back weeds in the area.
La Trobe MP Jason Wood hopes Olinda has set a new benchmark for brigades across the hills to also set up similar water saving measures.
