Lighting the night

MOUNT Evelyn’s Lisa Kennedy is shining a light on her life with lymphoma to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.
She’ll participate in Light the Night at Melbourne’s Alexandra Gardens from 5.30pm on Wednesday 26 September.
Ms Kennedy will light a white lantern to reflect on her battle against non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Her diagnosis in March 2010 came as a complete shock. Over seven months she endured nine treatments, including chemotherapy, but never stopped working and remained positive.
This year Light the Night falls the day after Ms Kennedy’s birthday, so she’s combining the two events to get as many people involved as possible.
“It’s a really moving event for a great cause and you don’t realise how many people are affected by blood cancer until you see an event like that,” she said.
Her determination to fund-raise will help the Leukaemia Foundation raise $2 million for blood cancer research from the event.
Participants will light and carry lanterns of hope – gold to remember a loved one, white to reflect on life with blood cancer, and blue to support others.
Sponsoring Ms Kennedy or taking part in Light the Night will help find a cure for leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
More than 50,000 Australian families face the challenges of leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma every day and another person is diagnosed every 46 minutes.
