WHAT makes a good librarian?
For Jeanette Birtles, a strong community spirit, a friendly demeanour and creativity all help to make her local library a better place to visit.
Ms Birtles nominated Ferntree Gully’s Julie Adams for the Australian Library and Information Association’s (ALIA) Australia’s Favourite Librarian awards for these reasons and more.
Ms Adams has been working in libraries for more than 22 years.
Ms Birtles said that during her time in Ferntree Gully Ms Adams has made an impact on the community by inspiring and contributing to a number of groups.
These range from helping to run the Knitting for Charity Group, the Crochet Coal Reef group and organising photographic exhibitions for local artists.
Ms Adams said her nomination was a complete surprise.
“It was just lovely – I didn’t know anything about it until Jeanette got in touch,” she said.
Ms Adams said that she got started as a librarian because of her love of books and her patrons keep her inspired.
“I just love talking to people – we have a close community here,” she said.
