Vision has survived through the years

Jerry Nyhouse, Joan Tromp, Stan VanLeeuwen, Keith Greenwood, Ria Heatherich, Marinus Beimers and Keith Noorbergen helped to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Mount Evelyn Christian School.

A SCHOOL with deep ties to the community marked its 40th anniversary last weekend, celebrating progress and a firm vision that survived four decades.
Mount Evelyn Christian School (MECS) opened in 1973 and on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 March staff and students celebrated with an opening ceremony re-enactment, a dinner and a church service.
Present at the celebrations were five out of the seven original members of the MECS school board and more than 150 visitors and former students.
Community Engagement Officer at MECS Nicole Nyhouse said that 2013 was an eventful year for the school that would celebrate the original vision of the Christian, Bible-based school.
“This is a real year of celebration for us,” she said.
“We’re lucky to have our founders here, with kids and grandkids still involved – it’s a strong community here, with lots of people tied in with the community.
“The facilities have changed and the school has grown a lot, but the ideals of a Bible-based school are still here.”
Ms Nyhouse said that the school was celebrating again in October with a staff and student reunion and that the staff were looking forward to the next 40 years at the school.
“The school is healthy, the education is still healthy – the future is looking great for MECS.”
