FRESH, healthy and cheap – that is what most people like to hear when talking local produce.
And, for new Mount Evelyn mother Sarah Gibbs, ensuring her nine-month-old baby Hugo has access to fresh, healthy, wholesome food is something that is very important to her.
“Having a baby especially, I’ve found that healthy food is important and I’m trying to introduce him to a range of fruit and vegetables,” she said.
“We have a lot available in this area and I think it is important to use what is available locally.”
Being well into Spring and with Summer just around the corner, local not-for-profit community health service Inspiro is also urging Yarra Ranges residents to use local produce and take advantage of their free Buy Local, Eat Seasonal directories.
Mrs Gibbs says the directory is very helpful by showing what fruit and vegetables are in season throughout the year and where is the best place to buy it.
Inspiro Population Health Team Leader Narelle Algie said some of Australia’s best fruit and vegetables are available right here in the Yarra Valley.
She said a strong demand from local growers had prompted the redistribution of Buy Local, Eat Seasonal directories to encourage the community to eat healthy and increase access to fresh affordable produce for Yarra Ranges locals.
Inspiro’s Buy Local, Eat Seasonal directory will be available at community venues including Yarra Valley Visitor Information Centre and the Dandenong Ranges Information Centre and can also be downloaded at inspiro.org.au
