AFTER 30 years with a beard, Mount Evelyn local Greg Carrick will be shaving it off to raise money for cancer research.
Taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave event, the radio personality will part ways with his beloved beard and moustache, ending up clean shaven.
Mr Carrick was personally touched by cancer when his brother and uncle died to Leukaemia when he was quite young.
“When I think of losing my brother when I was young, I always think of the pain my parents must have gone through, losing a child,” he said.
“Raising funds for cancer research is very needed and many people are desperate to not lose family members and friends.”
His daughter Joy has never seen her father without his beloved facial hair and will be photographing the event as it takes place. Mr Carrick’s friends Franc Smith and former Shire of Yarra Ranges mayor Tim Heenan will be shaving the beard live on The Bat Cave at YVFM 99.1.
“I can say they are looking forward to it with unnerving glee,” Mr Carrick said.
“The shave has been the talk of The Bat Cave on YVFM 99.1 and we will doing the shave during the show on 17 March, from 9pm.
“Listeners can follow the mayhem live, and see pictures going up on the Facebook page (www.facebook.com/groups/217985478215597) as it happens.”
Mr Carrick said he was going to do his best to stay clean shaven for the time being, but was sure the facial hair would make a re-appearance in the future.
“I’d like to stick it out for a month, but after having a beard for over 30 years, I’m pretty sure it will make a comeback,” he said.
Every year, thousands of Australians get sponsored to shave, colour or wax their hair to help people with blood cancer.
World’s Greatest Shave raises about half the money the Leukaemia Foundation needs to fund its important work.
This provides practical and emotional support to people with blood cancer as well as investing millions into research.
