The heritage-listed Rostrevor house in Sassafras has sold for over $2 million to a local family.

The iconic Dandenong Ranges property was built in 1893 on a two-acre property and features three storeys, 26 rooms and a guest house.

Fletchers Yarra Ranges director Scott Allison said the house was an expression of interest sale.

“A local family bought it and they’re going to restore it to a family home,” he said.

“The locals wouldn’t have been happy if somebody did major changes, bulldoze it or did something like that. I think the general community is quite happy with the result.”

The house was sold for just over $2.1 million and received multiple expressions of interest.

Mr Allison said after the four-week expression of interest campaign, the house was sold.

“It’s always a privilege when you get to do a house that is iconic,” he said.

“Every owner is important, but it’s always extra special when it’s an iconic home.”

The property – located at 411 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road – is included in the heritage overlay because it is “a representative or rare example of the once numerous guest houses in the Dandenongs during the 1920s,” according to the Victorian Heritage Database Report.

Mr Allison said it was a “straightforward, good campaign” to sell the house.

“The family that we sold it for has been involved in with the house for 60 plus years,” he said.

“I think they’re pretty happy to see go to a family.”
