The community is encouraged to brush up on their recycling knowledge and attend local events on offer as part of National Recycling Week.

Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week kicks off Monday 13 November, with the aim of educating the community to take up better recycling habits.

In recognition of the week, Cardinia Shire Council is running a Rethink Recycling education station, community pop-up sessions, and a clothing swap event for the local community.

Cardinia Shire mayor Tammy Radford encourages the community to show they care and do their share for National Recycling Week.

“According to council’s last recycling bin audit, nearly 29 per cent of items found in an average kerbside recycling bin didn’t belong in that bin,“ Mayor Radford said.

“When we place incorrect items in our recycling bins, it often means everything in the recycling bin is sent to landfill.

“By building better recycling habits and refreshing your knowledge on what goes in your recycling bin, you’ll help reduce waste and keep valuable materials out of landfill.”

National Recycling Week activities across Cardinia Shire include:

* ‘Rethink’ Recycling’ education station. The community can access educational resources to rethink their current recycling habits and submit these new habits to the pledge board at Pakenham Library from Monday 13 November to Sunday 19 November.

* Recycling pop-up stalls. Speak to council’s friendly Waste Services team about all things recycling at the community pop-up stalls. These sessions are being held on Monday 13 November, 2-4pm at Village Lakeside Shopping Centre (9 Lakeside Boulevard, Pakenham) and Friday 17 November, 10am-12 noon at Pakenham Marketplace (50, 54 John St, Pakenham).

* Clothing swap event. Community members can refresh their wardrobe in a thrifty and fun way at the Clothing Swap event. This free event will be held on Saturday 18 November, 11am-1pm at James Bathe Community Hub (67 Caversham Drive, Pakenham). Participants can bring up to six items in total of pre-washed clothing or accessories. These are then traded in for tokens to use as ‘currency’ for the swap.
